Dark Arts is a documentary that explores the dual nature of creativity, where art becomes both medicine and mirror. It examines how visual expression can soothe trauma, offer clarity, and foster healing, while also having the power to surface difficult emotions and unresolved experiences.
Through intimate conversations with artists and mental health experts, the film delves into the complex relationship between creativity and wellbeing. Personal stories and professional insights are woven together to reveal how art can act as both a refuge and a catalyst, shaping how individuals understand and navigate their inner worlds.
Rooted in real experiences, Dark Arts invites audiences into a space of reflection, challenging simple narratives about art and healing while opening up honest dialogue about the risks and rewards of creative expression.

The Dark Arts is a 20–30 minute documentary exploring the intersection of mental health and visual art, examining how creative practice can both support healing and, at times, trigger emotional risk. The film will be built through a series of intimate interviews with artists, educators, and community members, interwoven with visual sequences of their work and creative environments. The process will be collaborative and reflective, prioritizing participant voice and lived experience. Filming will take place in meaningful, personal spaces to capture authenticity and connection. The project will result in one completed documentary work, with a focused, character-driven narrative and a strong visual identity rooted in Northern Ontario.
New Works
The scope is modest in scale but ambitious in impact, combining professional production values with community-driven storytelling. All filming will take place in Northern Ontario, using local locations, a Northern Ontario-based production crew, and participants from within the region. This ensures the work remains grounded in the cultural and social realities of the communities it represents.
Skills/Career Development
This project supports our ongoing development as filmmakers, particularly in documentary storytelling that addresses complex social issues. It provides an opportunity to deepen our skills in directing, interviewing, and narrative structure while collaborating with a regional crew. The project also strengthens our capacity to create professional-level film work within Northern Ontario, expanding both our artistic practice and future opportunities for distribution, partnership, and funding.
Working with Community
This project is rooted in strong connections to the Northern Ontario arts, filmmaking, social justice, and education communities. Participants will include artists from a wide range of backgrounds, including Indigenous, LGBTQ, and racialized communities, as well as diverse gender identities. The creative process will involve respectful, participant-centered storytelling, where individuals share their experiences and perspectives in a supported environment. The film aims to reflect the diversity of voices in the region while fostering dialogue, understanding, and community connection through shared storytelling.
